The Niceforo’s wren (Thryophilus nicefori) Project is conducted by Fundación Conservación Verde an environmental organization established by members of the pioneering expedition to the Soatá  in 2004 that discovered the populations Niceforo’s wren (Thryophilus nicefori). The general goal of the project is to initiate a long-term program for the conservation of the Niceforo’s wren  and other wildlife and natural habitats of  Soatá area.

Activities undertaken under this project included the following:

Survey: Census was employed to survey the abundance and distribution of the rails in April, May, October and December in 2011 and January and February in 2012. A total of  11 survey stations along or near trails throughout Rural areas the Soata were covered.

In the Soata- wide survey in April-May 2011, Wrens were detected at 50 % of the total 11stations surveyed. This translated to an abundance index of 1.04 wrens/station. The October 2011 survey resulted in 40% positive stations out of the 10 surveyed in vereda La Laguna y Espinal at Soatá, giving a moderate abundance index of 1.41 rails/station.

Workshop soatá: A consultative workshop themed “Conservation of the Niceforo’s wren (Thryophilus nicefori)’ Natural Heritage” was held in October 2010 in the national meeting net work birdwachers the Colombia to identify key communication and education activities needed to raise local conservation awareness and cooperation. Several people local leaders and government officials participated in the workshop (Universidad Javeriana, Local Government Soatá, Birdwatchers, ONG-Local) and contributed ideas. Teacher training, community meetings and further workshops were identified and the assistance of  Soatá was sought for these.

Community consultations Soatá: A series of consultations covering 2 sitios and Vereda la Laguna was conducted in May 2011. The activity, participated by local stakeholders, resulted in a conservation action plan that specifies measures to control slash-and-burn farming, provide livelihood assistance to locals, intensify information and education campaigns, establish a protected area or sanctuary, and strengthen enforcement of environmental laws.
